Bloggers know that one of the most significant keys to online success is getting website traffic. The more visitors you have, the better your sales andprofits will be, right? Well, SEO (search engine optimization) plays amajor role website traffic. Here’s my Top 5 SEO Tips for bloggers. Butfirst…
What is SEO?
SEO is the process of increasing your visibility in search engine rankings. Typically, the higher up and more frequently a page is listed in search results, the more visitors it will receive.
Tip #1 – Grab Yourself an SEO Plugin
I use Yoast SEO. Yoast allows you to optimize your posts and pages easily, analyzes andscores your content, and gives you tips on how to improve your SEO. Italso creates your sitemaps and notifies Google and Bing of theirexistence. Score!
Tip #2 – Use a Keyword Planning Tool
Keyword planning tools, like Google Adwords Keyword Planner, can help you find relevantkeywords and see how much competition those words and phrases have.Shoot for words and phrases that are frequently searched for, but havelow to medium competition. Your keyword should be used in 1-2% of thetest of your post. This equates to 5-10 times for a 500 word post.
Tip #3 – Tag Your Keywords
This part can sound like a ton of technical jargon, but if you’re using the Yoast plugin, I swear, it’s very easy to understand.
Tags are where searchengines look, and if there are no tags, they’ll pass right by your webpages. No bueno, my friend. Use your keyword in your post title, maincontent, URL, and meta description. And don’t forget to tag your photosas well!
There are a number of tag types, including:
Title tags are quite possibly the most important place tosituate your keywords. Here’s what they look like – <title>Primary keyword phrase here. </title>
Your title tag is where you place your primary keyword or keyword phrase.
Header TagsHeader tags are next inorder of importance to search engines. They’re ranked in order ofimportance (h1, h2, etc.) and look like this – <h1>Primary and/orSecondary keywords here</h1>. The “1” designates this header asthe most important header on the page. Break up your content with subheaders, using your keyword. This will make your content easier to readand improve your SEO.
Meta TagsMeta tags provide thesmall descriptive text found underneath the title tag on the searchengine results page. Like title tags, these should be kept brief, informative and up to date.
Alt TagsAlt tags are used toprovide a text description of a graphic. Each graphic on your siteshould have a description and an alt tag.
Tip #4 – Add content regularly
We’ve all heard that content is king, right? Content is absolutely essentialfor traffic and a top search engine ranking. Content is what searchengine spiders look for and index – without it, there’s nothing to index or rank. Plus, isn’t that why your readers come to your site? To readall the amaaazzing info and stories you share?
Tip #5 – Get valuable and relevant incoming links
The more quality websites that link to your webpages, the more valuable search enginesperceive you to be, though not all links are created equal. Searchengines give more leverage to links from sites which are popular andcredible and from sites which are relevant to your website topic.
The different types of links are:
– A direct link looks like a basic website address, for example, www.yourwebsite.com
– A text link occurs when the webpage address is embedded in the text.Readers simply click on the link and are redirected to a new websitepage.
– If the link is to an internal web page, for example an articlepublished on a website, rather than the home page, it is called a “deeplink.”
Encourage linking to your website by:
- Adding content to your site.
- Submitting to article directories.
- Publishing press releases.
- Blogging and participating in social media groups and chats.
Tip #6 – Get social!
I know, I know… I said 5 SEO tips, but this one is crazy important, so I thought I’d add it as a bonus.
Now more than ever before, internet marketing is about building acommunity. Being active on social media is a valuable traffic generating tactic. Sites like Facebook and Twitter, and especiallyGoogle+ (I’m currently writing a post about the importance of G+ – staytuned!) can be powerful tools for generating links and traffic to yoursite – join a few groups made up of your target audience and postcomments, links to your site, and ideas that generate conversation.
